Increasing screen timing is a hazard!!

Digital technologies and interactive learning played a crucial role in maintaining some level of class continuity as the COVID-19 pandemic spread and governments across the world implemented school closures as part of their containment strategy. E-learning techniques will remain an essential backup plan for blended learning and in the event of fresh closures as schools reopen. In the future of education, digital engineering is anticipated to have several beneficial consequences. There is however, concern among ophthalmologists that increased screen time could further worsen the myopia epidemic, along with a substantial reduction in time spent outdoors.
For children younger than 2 years of age and no more than 1 hour a day for children 2 to 5 years of age, the WHO and the American Academy of Pediatrics allow for no screen time at all although no guidelines are provided for older children and teenagers who are in the age groups in which time spent on screens rises exponentially. Nevertheless the rising use of this technology and the continuing exposure of children to the screens of various devices also poses significant risks. When assessing the impact that screen time has on physical and mental health, it is necessary to take into account the length, material, night time usage and the number of digital devices. There is evidence of a correlation between screen time and a higher risk in children and adolescents of adiposity, eating disorders, depressive symptoms and a poorer quality of life. Every year, screen time rises. 5% of kids aged 5 to 7 years worldwide already owned a cell phone in 2018 and 42% had their own tablet. In addition, the cumulative use of screen time in children between 8 and 12 years of age has risen 49 minutes a day over the past 3 years, from an average screen time per day of 4 hours and 18 minutes in 2016 up to 5 hours and 7 minutes in 2019.
There are visual effects of this rise in screen time. In this way, there is an increasing concern about the risks that as a result of this changed lifestyle, both the rise in screen time and the reduction in time spent outdoors by children could pose. There is concern, in particular regarding children who experience myopia, which in turn may affect their academic achievements.
While it is important to take critical steps to delay or stop the spread of COVID-19, the long-term collateral effect of COVID-19 on myopia control policies needs to be assessed and mitigated by close cooperation between parents, schools and ministries.
